Do this before sending anything
- Write the exact text privately. Do not soften it. Do not make it smarter. Get it out without sending it.
- Name the trigger. A song, a photo, loneliness, anger, guilt, or seeing them online can all create a false emergency.
- Wait one minute. Breathe slowly and let the urge move through your body before you decide.
- Ask what the text is for. Is it logistics, repair, reassurance, control, or pain relief?
Your message stays in this browser only.
Texts that usually make the spiral worse
- Long explanations sent while panicking.
- Messages that ask them to prove they care.
- Birthday, holiday, or late-night texts used as excuses.
- Follow-up messages because they did not reply fast enough.
When texting may be reasonable
Logistics, safety, shared responsibilities, children, housing, or urgent practical issues can require contact. Keep the message short, clear, and limited to the practical matter. If the message is really about emotional relief, wait.
What to do instead tonight
Check your no-contact streak, write an unsent letter, drink water, put your phone across the room, and choose one action that helps future you. If you broke no contact already, read the reset guide.
